We are a group of golfers that formed an organization called Putters From Heaven about 7 years ago. Our objectives are to help a variety of individuals in many different ways. One of our main objectives is to help smokers who would like to stop, and to educate as many kids as possible from ever starting.

It is becoming more and more disheartening to see PGA Tour Professionals smoking WHILE they are playing. Although, much worse than that, is that it's being broadcast on television to millions more. This must be worth billions to the tobacco companies as an advertisement for the industry.

We believe the comments made by the announcers during the U.S. Open at Oakmont last weekend need to be addressed to clarify any misleading information regarding smoking. The comments made regarding Angel Cabrera, winner of the tournament, was along the lines that he was nervous, and that smoking will calm his nerves. We believe this is totally irresponsible, and absolutely untrue. Smoking is a stimulant, it speeds up the heartrate, and is not a relaxant. The only real calming effects are to relieve the nicotine withdrawals that the body suffers when deprived of nicotine every few minutes.

Many aspiring golfers (and many others) formed indelible opinions of smoking from those remarks. We believe the comments need to be clarified to prevent what could be, many young men and women from reaching their full potential, and possibly becoming a slave to nicotine for life (like so many others).

We thank you in advance for a reply to our concerns, and hope you will consider correcting any misconceptions that may have been formed from the comments made by the NBC announcers under your employ.
